Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. Can I get some stickers please?
    A. USA residents can get G-Sport stickers through Odyssey by sending them a self-addressed stamped envelope and letting them know you’d like some G-Sport stickers. International requests can be fulfilled by our distributors.
  • Q. Why are the hubs so big?
    A. Big things are generally stronger than little things, when you hollow out a big thing it can often also be lighter than something smaller. So although our hubs are big on the outside there is a lot of air inside. Having a big axle and big bearings means that the hub ends up pretty big overall, but it also ends up strong, smooth and light. There is also no shortage of space inside a wheel so why not make the most of it. So quit looking at the middle of your wheels while you ride and concentrate on how fast you are going.
  • Q. How long do the bearings last?
    A. If you look after the bike then there is no reason that the bearings shouldn’t last almost indefinitely. I get plenty of emails from owners of hubs that are 5 or even 10 years old looking for their first set of replacements. Even less well looked after it is very unusual for a set of hub bearings to last less than 2 years. Obviously if you set out to destroy them and ride through rivers etc and wash all the lube out then they wont last as long, but they will always outlast other hubs.
  • Q. I wanted to buy a limited edition colour part, but I left it too late and missed out. Can I buy the colour I want direct or get a special order?
    A. Sorry, but the answer is no. The limited edition runs are just that, limited. You can check round bike shops for old stock or scour Ebay or get creative with some spray paint but when they are gone, they are gone.
  • Q. Why dont G-Sport make parts other than wheel stuff?
    A. G-Sport is focused on wheel parts because wheels are so important to a bike, just as important as a frame. I do work on other parts under the Odyssey brand.

Hey George. I just bought my second Marmoset and my first Ratchet. They are so nice and feel so good when riding. The Marmoset came with volcano bolts and one of them got stripped out where the allen wrench goes and I can’t get it off. On the Ratchet, the threads pulled out of the axle. I love the hubs and don’t want to buy a new one, is there anything I can do like send the bolts and axle in to get them replaced? They’re less than a week old.
    Thanks.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Yes. I think you already emailed me right? I will mail back.

Hey george im a big fan of odsy. and g sport so i got the ratchet rear hub and i was wondering if i can use a hub guard other than a g sport one because i cant find one here in the philippines. If i get and fbm or another brand will it fit my ratchet? I dont want to buy a guard then find out i just wasted my money because it doesent fit. Thanks!

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

No. The FBM and other standard guards will not fit. You need a Ratchet specific one (or a GLAND). Apart from us there are Ratchet specific guards made by BSD, and Zodiac Eng.

i have the gsport marmoset hub and it barley spins how do i take it apart? the collers seem stuck on the hub

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

They should just pull off. Please email me with more info if you cant get to the bottom of the problem.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Thomas

    Hi,

maybe it´s clear and i´m just not seeing it but do the Plegs work with the Ratchet and the standard 14mm Bolts?

For me it looks like no but maybe i´m just wrong.

    Thank you a lot!

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

YES. Some 17mm sockets are too big for the PLEGs but it shouldnt be too hard to find one that fits.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Andrew

hey george i bought my ratchet hub in january. and it started to make noise today. i removed the driver and one of the srings were bent. how can i get another one?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Your distributor should be able to help you out with spares. The springs should not normally need replacing though. Please email me with more info if necessary.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ ratty

    hey george hows it,
im using a ratchet hub and ive had no problems with it whatsoever appart from the hubs developed a slight rocking. i checked to make sure it wasnt the rim/spokes that were loose but upon further investigation i found that the bearings in the driver have movment, i was wondering if ther is a way to solve this or dose this mean a new driver and if so were could i get one from.

thanx alot and keep up the work ratty

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

The driver should be able to slide along the axle a very small amount, less than 1mm. This is normal and you should not be able to feel this and it will not make the wheel feel like it has any play. It is just the driver “float” to allow it to run as smoothly as possible. If the driver moves more than this, or if there is play detectable at the rim then please email me with as much info as possible so I can try to diagnose it.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Will

I’ve scanned the internet tirelessly looking for replacement Ratchet Collars in the UK. I’m guessing I need to get them through a distributor but which of them are G-Sport stockists(?) I desperately need to hunt one down!

    Cheers

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

In the UK IMG distribution can help you out (or your bike shop can get in touch with them to sort it out).

    Hi George,

I read in a previous post that the Birdcage rims are possibly being released this month? Just wondering if the ETA is still relevant? I’m really stoked on the hubs and am looking forward to giving the rims a try as well. Thanks for your time.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Not sure on the exact date right now. Looking like mid April now.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Jonny

    Hey George,

I was just wondering if you have to lace a wheel that will be running as LHD differently? As I have just built a LHD wheel up (36h 3x) and someone who has considerably more experience then myself has told me it should be laced with the in-bound driver side spokes being twisted clockwise rather then anti-clockwise?

Im quite new to wheel building, and I just can’t see that it would make any difference to the lacing whether the hub was running RHD or LHD? as the wheel will still be travelling in the same direction?

Hopefully that all makes sense and I’m not just being a fool?!

    Thanks!

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Some people who build high end road and MTB wheels may think that this makes a difference, however for BMX our wheels are so much stronger and stiffer that any tiny difference that it may make is irrelevant. I have never seen a satisfactory technical explanation as to why it would make any significant difference and my belief is that it doesn’t.

George Just gotta say I’m a Oddy/Gsport/Sunday gooroo for life! With that being said people are dropping freecoasters leaving the market dry with the exception of KHE. Is there any word on the G coaster?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

The coaster is still in development, progress is painfully slow I am afraid but we are making progress however it is unlikely to come out this year.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ ian olwen

i bought a ratchet hub from flipbykes here in the philippines last july i think… the problem is that the lock on my driver that holds the needle bearing in place always pops off, and the driver grounded the aluminum collar… what should i do? it happened twice already… i want to ride right away…

in your instructional manual it is called “BEARING ASSM CIRCLIP”

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Sorry to hear of the problem. With early drivers this problem can occur and is nearly always caused by a wide chain, or uneven link pins or a masterlink hitting the hub shell. This in turn tries to force the driver out of the hub as the chain jams in the gap between the teeth and the hub shell. So first please check your chain all the way round and see if any part of it is jamming as described. Newer drivers use a slightly different type of circlip which is much more resistant to being pushed out, and if you drop me an email with your shipping address we can send you one out and this should fix your problem.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Mick

How’s it going George, I am in the market for your 48 hole ribcage rims as I am a old school lardie and as I haven’t rode in 20 years, ive turned into a 18 stone pie and beer monster, hopeing to drop some weight by starting to ride again so this modern stuff is foreign to me, so where can I get a vandal 48 hole front from and I use to ride a coaster rear, so it looks like the only 48 rear hub will be one of these freewheel coaster type, when is your one coming out and can you let me know what is the best one at present to buy. I have chose your products as the reviews have been very good and advise from others also rate your gear bullet proof also I would like to run pegs so doe the front hub have to be 14 mm? Try and put me straight please George it would be much appreciated, cheers Mick.ps keep the good work up for the Brits

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Demand for 48s is very low these days because the 36s are so strong now. We do still have some 48 hole parts available though. The coaster is still in development and is unlikely to come out this year. If you are heavy/hard enough to need 48s then unfortunately there isnt any coaster that will stand up very well I am afraid. Drop me an email and we can discuss things more specifically.

hey george i bought gsport hex nipples and i lost my tool is there any way i can get another one because i cant find them online

i have the odsy. hazard cassette 3/8 conversion kit and i was wondering what hub guard could i run it with?
I know the BSD jersey barrier hub guard works with odsy. rear hubs but would it still work with the conversion kit?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

I dont know. You would need to check with Grant at BSD. The conversion kit axle is NOT externally threaded so if the BSD guard is threaded then it wont fit.

      George

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ jaime

does it matter how you put the collars on because when I put my pegs on I didn’t know I put them on backwards (I hadn’t been riding for a while) and when I tightend them up my wheel would spin so I grinded them down a bit and now the it seems loose

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Yes. the collars need to be on the right way round (with the big end towards the dropout for more peg support). It does sound like you need to buy new collars.

      George

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ carlos

will any of your hub guards work for my bullet proof sealed 48h 14mm front wheel

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Does the gland come in any other colors?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Hope you are OK, glad the wheel proved itself so well. Make sure you check your frame didn’t get twisted in the accident in case you need to claim for it.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Dan

Hey George, last summer I broke the internals of my marmoset hub (basically the coil came out after buying new bolts), I had requested to order new internals to fix my hub but after a couple months my shop said it hadnt came, at that point I bought a new hub.

Now im missing my marmoset and im wondering if you can send it in for repair directly to g-sport? Ive browsed the site looking for internals to buy but I havent found it.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

      YES. Drop me an email.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ vlad

Hi George. I beg you to help me decide. and I have a question for you to you with this question: hub G-Sport ratchet there is a caveat: one bolt tightly screwed, when only half an inch to the end. is it possible to change without assurances from the distributor. kiev.ukraina.
or can you say are full of advice. or not worth worrying about this problem?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Sorry Vlad I cant really understand the question. Please email me with more details and photos if possible.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Brandon

Are ratchet hubs driver supposed to have play?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

There should be a very small amount of axial float about 1mm at most (less than half the thickness of a spoke) however there shouldn’t be more than this or any noticeable (wobble). The float is just there to allow the needle bearing to spin smoothly and the location washers take zero load. If you have more play than this please email with details.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ jesus c

Is the odyssey Hazarad V3 cassette 3/8 conversion kit just as strong as the normal axle that come with it? What im asking is, are 3/8 bolts in the conversion as strong as the regualr axle. or should i stick with the axle instead.
    2. What does it mean in the description of the 3/8 conversion when it says it “handle pegs as well of the reg. axle”. Handles as in the strength or it holds it in place?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Yes. From a practical perspective it will handle the loads from pegs just as well as the regular axle. ie. it is just as good with pegs from every perspective.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ kev

hi george, what spokes do you recomend using?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

The Odyssey spokes are great, if you cant get those then DT swiss and wheelsmith are good brands too.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Mitch

    Gday George
I’ve used a few online calculators to try and get the spoke lengths I’m after, but I’m getting inconsistent results.
    It’s a Homber laced 4 cross to a ribcage.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Also, I assume there’s not, but are there any plans in place to bring out another 48 ratchet?
    Cheers mate.
    - Mitch

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

You want 186mm spokes for that combo.
As far as I am aware we are still offering the 48 hole Ratchet but I will check. You may need to chase your distributor for it.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Thomas Wegerhoff

Hey i need springs and pawls for my ratchet hub.
    Can i get these separately?
Or do i have to buy a whole new driver?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Yes. All parts should be available as spares through your country’s distributor.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Ben :D

Hey, i am a big G-sport fan but unfortunatley i need a 9 toooth driver for my ratchet hub but i cant find them in the UK, would it be possible to get one shipped over and if so how much would it cost?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Any G-Sport/Odyssey stockist should be able to order it for you. If you are still having problems please contact the UK distributor IMG who will definitely be able to help you out.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Karl

Hey George, I once shot you a Mail about problems with the retaining clip in my ratchet. You replied and told me to give you my address and everything. But after I did you never replied( I sent you a bunch of other mails)
Maybe theyre in your junk folder or something…
other than that my wheels have been perfect(marmoset ratchet 48h ribcages) Im running them for a year now.
I destroyed a lot of wheels and especially axles, so G sport is the perfect solution! but please dont stop making stuff in 48h(rear) its not much heavier and you maybe have to true your wheel twice a year other than after every session…

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Really sorry about that. If mail doesnt seem to be getting through (or a response) please do always chase up. Please drop me another mail and mention this post so I can look it up. If you are in the US you can always phone Odyssey.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Albert

what is the spoke length for a gsport ratchet laced to a gsport ribcage, also what is the spoke length for a gsport marmoset laced to a gsport ribcage. thank you, have a nice day

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Assuming 36 hole and 3cross pattern it is 186mm for the Ratchet and 188mm for the Marmoset

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Eli

Hey George, i am lacing up a ratchet to a 7ka rim and was wondering what spoke length i need for 3 cross lacing. Thanks!!

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Assuming 36 hole it is 184mm

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ LOGAN

HEY IM REALLY INTERESTED IN THE BIRDCAGE RIMS BUT I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS IS IT STRONGER THAN THE 7KA? WHEN WILL IT BE OUT? AND HOW MUCH?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

We are looking at a March release date right now. Sorry I cant be more precise right now. Strengthwise it should be close to a 7KA but probably not “stronger” overall.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ joel

    hey George.

do you think it is a bad idea to double spring my ratchet driver?

    thanks.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

I havent tried it, but I doubt it will be good. Why?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ joel

because when i had my primo i had it double sprigged and it engaged a little better.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

It really shouldn’t be necessary to make any changes.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ drew medley

ok, so i’m ordering grport wheels but i and putting red spokes in them i want my spokes to stay red! so will the ratchet hubgaurd work on the front hub?!

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

      NO.
      But the GLAND will.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Jack

    Hey George

Just wondering if there is a hub guard that will fit the marmoset.

Thanks dude and keep up the amazing work.

    Jack

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

The GLAND will fit (fits almost any hub)

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Jack

Hey again, thanks for you quick response george

Is there a hub guard that will fit the marmoset other than the gland?

      Jack

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

I think BSD and Knight both do them.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ jack

      Thanks again dude.

Reading back my second question it looks like I think badly of of the gland- I don’t, its a fantastic, innovative piece of kit, but the bike I want a guard for has been built up do look pretty, and the gland would kinda kill it a little.

      Jack

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

No problem, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc.

does odyssey or gsport have any plans on making a freecoaster any time soon

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

We are still working on a freecoaster but we dont expect to have it out anytime soon.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Ryan

Hi George does G-sport make a freecoaster for flatland or if not do they have any plans to.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ matt

    hello george,
just like to say gsport are looking good these day ten plus years ago i had a pair of the first gsports…

wondering if you can help me am want to know mid and spanish bb sizes 19 and 22mm

    THANK FOR YOUR TIME

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Spanish BB bearings are non standard (ie. you will only find them from bike shops and suppliers) the outside diameter is 37mm and the width is 9mm

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Paul

    Hello
I was wondering if the FBM hub guard would work with the GSport Ratchet Hub?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

No. Best bet is to use the specific Ratchet guard.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Kyle

What spoke length and lacing pattern would you recommend for a rear 48h monkey/7ka?

    Thanks for any help.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

      184mm

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Charles Arthur

Hey George, first off congrats on the new addition to the family. Now on to my question. I am the proud new owner of a GSport hubset and have the new 3/8th aluminum axle Ratchet. Can I run a peg on it or should I replace the axle with the 14mm chro-mo axle? note: I don’t ride heaavy street if at all. Mostly park.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

      Thanks for the congratulations.
The Aluminium axle is absolutely designed for peg use and is considerably stronger than a standard solid 14mm axle, please dont feel you have to hold back at all.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ joel messa

how do i flip the driver from lhd to rhd?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Consult the manual at the top of this page…

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ austin

when will the newest version of the rachet come out?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

There is no new version. Small running changes have been made to allow the use of wider chains but most components are unchanged. All changes have been made for quite a while now and newer hubs are identifiable by a small circle between the words GSPORT and RATCHET on the non-drive side hub flange.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ forrest taylor

the whippermann dosnt work on the ratchet what so ever.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ matt

I’ve been riding my ratchet for a while now and the time has come to get a new driver. So my question is, what comes with the driver? Does the driver bearing and Bearing Cir-clip come with it too?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Yes. The driver comes with all it’s bearings and pawls and springs etc.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Carter

    Hey George,
I keep squaring out rims (Hazard Lite, Roll Cage) even after having them tightened beyond tight, and so I am wondering which is stronger, the Ribcage, or the Seven K-A? Being that you work closely with Odyssey you seem best fit to answer this question. Thanks.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Wow, those are some tough rims to be damaging. The Ribcage would be the strongest of those rims. However I suggest that you also check that you arent OVER tightening your spokes…

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Carter

Overtightening may be the cause, thank you very much.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Ooti

“Moving your bars forward (or using a longer stem) will give you more room up front but it wont make the frame feel any longer, it will still spin at the same speed and have similar stability. The only real change will come with front wheel tricks. Putting your weight further forward it will make a significant difference to the feel of front wheel tricks.”

What difference would it make to front wheel tricks? Am I correct in assuming a shorter stem would be better for balancing front wheel tricks and barspins? Would a 20.8 frame, 48mm stem, 75.5 head and a 20.5 frame, 53mm stem, and a 75 head feel roughly the same (assuming all other major dimensions are equal).

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

      The short answer is no.
The feel of the bike for front wheel tricks will depend on a whole load of factors, but it boils down to where you are, where your feet are, where the wheel is, and how the steering geometry relates.
However a 20.8 to 20.5 toptube is a pretty small change, as is going from a 48 to 53mm stem. So why not experiment just by moving your bars forward a little? It wont cost you anything and will be no different to buying the longer stem…

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Jake

yeah i am having the same issue right now. i have a 21″ frame and i am wondering if i should get a 46mm stem. im not sure if that will effect the overall performance of my bike. help?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Same answer really. Just try it. Move your bars back to mimic the shorter stem and ride it. Having a shorter stem will be almost exactly the same. The ONLY difference will be an almost undetectable difference in bar sweep.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ sean

George i am a huge fan of G-sport, i have the marmoset and rathcet hubs and i dont think id go any other way. they are by far the best hubs ive had and so glad that i made the choice of buying them, what was your idea to make the g-sport hubs the way they are? cause i see hubs getting smaller and smaller and they always break.

  • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Albert

    1. what is a torque wrench and how does it affect the hub
    2. alot of people are saying the marmoset is getting loose and has alot of play, is there a reason why because i am planning to buy a marmoset and i want my bike not to have anything loose
    3. do g sport wheels not bend as much, because i like a low maintenance bike. it sucks having to tighten your bike every time you go to the skatepark.

      1. A torque wrench is a tool that allows you to monitor how tightly you are doing up your nuts and bolts. It has no effect on the bike apart from making tightening bolts more precise. 90% of riders dont feel the need for one, but some people like to know the numbers…
      2. We occasionally get hubs with this issue, but it is a very low percentage of hubs sold. Any looseness may well be due to worn bearings or damaged dropout faces etc, however occasionally it is due to manufacturing errors. We will ALWAYS warranty any hub with this issue.
      3. Wheel strength depends upon every component of the wheel (hubs, spokes, nipples and rim), and upon the quality of the build and how tight the spokes are. All of our products are designed to maximise wheel durability with features like wide flange spacing, angled flanges, cross over lacing, patented nipple seat reinforcement, high grade materials, etc etc. Get these built up by good builder with sufficient spoke tension (and maintain this tension occasionally) and you should barely have to touch them for years.

It looks like the birdcage is gonna be 36 off the bat, are there any plans for a 48H version? I’m a 250 pound guy and running a 36H wheelset isn’t in my near future. Am I stuck with the ribcage for life? Thanks George!

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

It is very hard for us to justify doing 48s these days for strictly economic reasons. We recently had to sell off a lot of 48 rims cheap due to lack of demand, however, if you are 250lbs and riding very hard then you probably want to be running the heavier rim anyway so the Ribcage would be perfect for you anyway(I would have thought). This doesnt mean that we will never do a 48 hole version, just that it looks unlikely right now. If distributors ask for it then we can easily make it.

i stripped my monkey axle. will the marmoset axle fit the front monkey hub? they look exactly the same.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

NO. The shoulder spacing is different. Sorry.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ rick

      found this: http://store.odysseybmx.com/axlegsportmonkeyrraluminum38.aspx

not sure whether that’s a front or rear axle though.

also just out of curiosity, would i be able to fit a front homer axle into my front monkey hub using the same collars and bearings as the monkey hub?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

      That is the rear.

Yes. Old Monkey and Homer axles and collars are fully interchangeable.

Hey George, I am about to order a 9t Ratchet, everyone keeps telling me to get a 10 tooth; due to problems with the 9 tooth, are they right? Also will I be able to run a Wippermann IG8 chain with a 9 tooth Ratchet? Thanks…

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ Travis Wooten

Sorry, one more thing, Do you guys make the ribcage in white or do you have any plans on making it in white?

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

Not currently. I dont know if we have plans. Sorry.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com George

You should be fine with either size. I dont think that the Wippermann chain works with ANY 9 tooth drivers but I havent personally tried it.

    • http://www.gsportbmx.com/techcorner/qanda/ coolsauce

you need at least a 14 or 15t cog for an 1G8 to run properly. that chain is waay too beefy for the small circumference of a 9t driver.
